Early Life
As a kid, David Miller had a passion for sports which included tennis, hockey, and squash. However, the 25-year-old athlete from Pietermaritzburg was fell in love with cricket among his interests.
Before his debut in IPL 2013, David was a part of the South African national squad that went to compete in the West Indies from May to June of 2010. Back then, it was a difficult season for South Africa because they had a hard time making a breakthrough in the 2010 World T20.
The organizers were searching for new players and Miller was among the fortunate individuals who were given a rare opportunity to be included in the squad’s First XI.
IPL Career
His luck turned for the better when he debuted in the 2013 season of the Indian Premier League. He became the highest-scoring runner for the Punjab Kings. During his debut season, he has amassed a score of 418 runs at a capacity of 59.71.
He also produced a score of fifties thrice and also made a century. His feat of producing a century was derived from batting 38 balls during their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore and it was deemed the third fastest in the history of the IPL.
His batting skills were highly praised among the Indian cricketing community; as a result, he was kept by the Punjab Kings for the 2014 auctions. But in the 2025 IPL auction, Miller joined the Lucknow Super Giants for ₹ 7.5 crores.
International Career
David Miller made his international debut at the South African national team, just in time before the 2011 ODI World Cup. Despite initially being announced as part of the main roster of players, he did not make the final list.
His efforts did not come to fruition until the 2015 edition of the World Cup, where he established a much more prominent role and became a prolific finisher. At this point, he produced a score of 324 runs at an average of 65km/hr and a strike capacity of 139.
In the 2015 season of the tournament, he had an auspicious start when he scored 138 from just 92 balls during their match against Zimbabwe. He showed a 256-run with his squad mate JP Duminy who scored 115. This collaboration was highly regarded as the highest partnership for the fifth wicket in the history of the ODI World Cup.
During the 2019 edition of the World Cup, South Africa, and Miller’s luck ran out and they had a harrowing season but his luck will turn for the better at the IPL 2025.
Playing Style of David Miller
After his attention-getting performances representing Kings XI Punjab in the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League, he gained recognition as a prodigy in ball batting. However, despite being a prolific batter and making a few numbers, Miller still faced criticism during his appearances for the Punjab team.
During his career as a batter in cricket, he has developed a style of play that is much more appropriate for the international mode of cricket. However, over time he has become consistent in his play across all cricket forms.
